Installing unsigned drivers in 64-bit · 25. March 2007, 06:14 by Derek Torres

Tonight, I had my first share of difficulties when trying to install my new Sprint mobile broadband service on a laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Like many other hardware manufacturers, it seems that a number of broadband card manufacturers – Pantech and Novatel, for example – didn’t bother to come out with Vista-compatible cards or cards that weren’t compatible with all Vistas.

So, if you’re running Windows Vista with Sprint, you’re going to want to avoid the Pantech card for now. However, if you use the Novatel Ovation U270 card with a 64-bit processor, you won’t be pleased to know that it doesn’t really work with 64-bit. Why not? Because Novatel didn’t bother to sign their drivers and Winows Vista 64-bit doesn’t allow for the installation of unsigned drivers.

Until a new version for 64-bit Vista comes out, there are two workarounds:

1. Boot Windows holding down the F8 key and select “Disable driver signature enforcement”. This will let you install unsigned drivers for that session.
2. Run cmd.exe as an administrator (right-click it to do this) and then type:
bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

  1. Thanks for posting this Tip. I was able to use my mobile broadband card on my new HP because of this usefal tip. EVDO forums has a lot of useful info. But nobody was able to get there Sprint cards to work with the 64 bit O.S. I just joined there forum and submitted a post that includes a link to this article. So you may see an increase in hits, questions, feedback as a result. Thanks again!

  2. Just had a thought: you May want to Add to your write up for users like myself (Newbie) Step by Step How to enable integrity_Checks. For the time when there are Vista 64 Bit signed sprint drivers.

    Thanks again!

  4. Nicole,
This work around worked fine for me, I am using Vista ultimate 64 bit o.s. too. What card are u using? If it is a pantech I don’t think it will work. If u are using a novatel brand card u should have no problems. I am using the Ex720 card by novatel. If id did not work maybe it is user error, Might be worth it to give it another try.

    Thanks,
    Tim

  5. I have a slight glitch and maybe I am doing something wrong but when I use the CMD Work around or use the f8 option my Speakers are perma muted and I can’t unmute them which is rather frustrating because I like to use web conferences quite often while I am traveling… Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I did or how to fix this problem please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Marion

  6. I have a 64x Vista Ultimate laptop that is using the Sprint U720 usb Modem. I used the install disk that was for XP and the Modem has been working great. And I did not follow either of the suggested work arounds listed above.

  7. It’s great to see when users don’t need a workaround. Unfortunately, this is something that has plagued many readers here, but I’m glad it worked for you! Thanks for writing.

  8. Hi all. I just got a new Hp laptop vista 64bit AMD. I am trying to get my CCU-550 EV-DO USB MODEM to work on my new machine. On the official website I have seen that they only have software for 32bit vista. I dont know if u could help me get around this problem by doing something similar to Sprint mobile broadband service that you suggested
