OS X Tiger vs. Vista vs. Ubuntu Security · 14. November 2007, 16:55 by Derek Torres

Rich recently posted a 15-point comparison of the three operating systems on his blog.

Congrats on a well-written article even if I have some minor disagreements. For example, I find IE7 to be far superior to Firefox in terms of ease-of-use. I’d also agree with a commenter who posits that IE7 in secure mode is safe as houses when run with UAC. It may be annoying as hell, but it’s safe.

I’d also disagree that Mac’s onboard malware protection is any better than Windows Defender. Defender also has added value in that you can work with startup programs and elect to enable or disable specific elements.

  1. Windows Vista in my opinion is still a poor copy of the mac OS X. Yes, windows still command a larger choice of software for pros and consumers alike but it still can’t match the power that Mac OS X has to offer. Many of vista’s new features were available on a mac years ago. Hmmm, I downgraded my pc to win xp or should I say “reupgraded” my pc because of Vista’s unstability. It was a waste of good money.

  2. I use Windows both at home and at work, and I disagree that IE is in anyway superior to Firefox.

For the first few weeks of work, I had been using IE. I liked the fact that it now supported tabbed browsing and generally improved over the previous version. However, it would frequently crash on me during the course of the workweek. I eventually asked our systems admin to allow us to use Firefox. Problems solved.

I will concede, however, that Vista is easier to use than XP.

  3. My experience on IE vs. Firefox is that IE may be marginally easier and faster but it is very unstable on both my office and home machines. I have now switched to Firefox as my default browser.
